So the fates decided that we were going to have school today.. Yay! (although I did not feel that excitement when I had to wake up at 7:30 this morning)
I went in today 8th period to Ms. Lutter's room to wheel-throw my first tea bowl. Only, I didn't end up making anything. Well, technically I did, but it didn't resemble a tea bowl in any way. Oops..
I think partly the clay was too soft to work with. It was easy to center but really hard to shape. Both of my attempts today ended up being thrown in the slop bucket because they became really off centered and the shape was disfigured.
I'm going to try and go in during second period sometime this week and (hopefully) finish my first tea bowl!

Hey Maja,
ReplyDeleteI'm a completely random person, but I came across these WISE blogs (I was a 2004 graduate of IHS, had Ms. Gergely for 11th grade English, and participated in the WISE program) and was really intrigued by your project. I wanted to let you know of a fantastic wood-fired potter in town. Perhaps you've already reached out to her, but her name is Momoko Keane. She's married to a landscape architecture professor at Cornell who is an expert in Japanese gardens and tea houses. Here are links to her and her husband's websites:

I know that I'm a totally random person, so don't feel like you have to contact me, but should you want my email is mollylchiang@gmail.com. Perhaps I can be some sort of resource for you as I lived in Tokyo for a year (have lots of contacts there, including an Igayaki potter), did my architecture school thesis on a subject somewhat related to the tea ceremony, and traveled back to Japan last year. Also, my mother has developed a recent obsession with Japanese ceramics (and lives in Ithaca!). Anyway, good luck with your tea set!
